Save Our Shores is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the environment and educating the public. As Santa Cruz is a beach town, one of their main initiatives is organizing volunteers who participate in regular beach cleanups and other related activities. Save Our Shores had a Drupal site that served like an Intranet for it's core volunteer team called Stewards. Unfortunately the Stewards site was old and built on Drupal. It was broken, difficult to use, and nobody knew how to fix it.

We set out to build a new Stewards site that would be easier to use and maintain, and give the Stewards better tools for reporting and communicating with other members of the volunteer team. Interviews where conducted with staff and volunteers to determine specific needs and functionality desired.

The new site makes use of S3 member to restrict access to only those with an approved login account. There are a few different membership levels that determine what the Steward can do on the site. Stewards can create events using Event Espresso, and others can RSVP to events with email notifications and confirmations. With the addition of BuddyPress, Stewards have a closed social network where they can share results of events, disseminate information, etc.
